I'll admit it. The first few times I saw commercials for Avatar, I wrote it off as some stupid alien/action movie for guys. So, when lo and behold, a few of my guy friends decided to see it in 3d on opening night, I politely declined and thought nothing else of the film. But when I started hearing rave review from my female friends, it dawned on me that maybe I should check it out. So I saw the Avatar movie. And I loved it. The special effects were incredible, the native people were beautiful, and I was in awe. I too became one of the people who couldn't stop talking about how awesome Avatar was.
But the very next day, I stumbled upon a posting on Facebook that left me feeling a little jaded. Someone had printed out a plot synopsis of Pocahontas and had replaced overlapping themes/character types etc. with elements from Avatar. And then I realized they were basically the same movie, but Avatar cost much more and took place on a different planet. So I did a little more thinking, and remembered one of my favorite childhood movies: Ferngully. Again coming to the realization that the parallels were uncanny. I figured that other people had already caught on to the same notion as I had, so I checked it out, and found out that just about everyone else agreed.
